The Inn at Union Pier

Just 200 steps from Lake Michigan, the Inn at Union Pier is filled with wonderful antiques and, interestingly,  functioning wood-burning antique enameled Swedish fireplaces, called kakelugns, gaily painted with delicate flowers.  The inn has the largest collection of kakelugns in the country.

The antique stoves, which range in age from 80 to 125 years, are part of the Swedish heritage of the area (there is still the Swedish Bakery further north on Red Arrow Highway) and much of the furniture are Danish and Swedish antiques.  The three buildings of the inn, painted a Swedish blue, were  originally built in the 1920's as a summer resort called Karonsky's Hotel - the only kosher hotel in Union Pier.
