Printing Company Once Housed City's Fire Wagon and Horses
A fire swept through downtown Buchanan in 1862, destroying 20 buildings. A northeast wind shifted the flames away from Pear’s Mill which still stands, but much else was lost and the city determined to have a rapid response in case of future fires (before the advent of brick buildings and easy access to fire equipment, fires frequently raged through downtowns of both small and large cities, destroying the wooden buildings in their path). And so the McCollum Livery, located of Days Avenue and Roe Streets, housed the horse team and the city’s fire wagon. The livery building still stands and now houses a printing company. It is here, the McCoy’s Creek turns, making its way along Days Street.
