New Troy- Local Conservation Issues Seminar

Saturday, February 3, 2018
10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Join Berrien Conservation District, Chikaming Open Lands, and Friends of New Troy, Saturday, February 3, 2018 from 10 am – Noon at the New Troy Community Center to learn about local land conservation issues.

Ryan Postema, Executive Director of Chikaming Open Lands, will share his expertise in land preservation and management. He will highlight land preservation options available to landowners and discuss the benefits of conserving private lands and protecting our local natural resources by collaborating with a local conservation organization like Chikaming Open Lands.

Jared Harmon, Invasive Species Educator of Berrien Conservation District, will discuss the role of the Conservation District in the community and the impacts of invasive species to the local environment. Invasive species are a major threat to our natural resources, our local economy, and human health. The ability to control these species requires proper education and cooperation to provide effective control. Harmon will highlight efforts and partnerships taking place in Berrien County and across the state that work to prevent invasive species from harming the environment.

Berrien Conservation District's mission is to promote the protection and improvement of Berrien County's natural resources through partnerships, education, reforestation, ground and surface water protection, and erosion control measures.

Chikaming Open Lands is the local land conservancy dedicated to preserving the open spaces and natural rural character of southwest Berrien County. We protect and restore native plant and animal habitat in the area, improve water quality in our rivers, streams, and Lake Michigan, and permanently preserve ecologically significant forests, prairies, and wetlands, as well as prime farmland and other open spaces in this community.

Friends of New Troy is a non-profit organization whose member volunteers maintain and operate the New Troy Community Center, providing area residents with a place to gather and create community. The Community Center receives no government funding, supported entirely through memberships, donations, and fundraisers.
