Marble Springs Historic Campgrounds

Marble Springs Historic Campground - Allen, Michigan 

The campgrounds is located just west of the village of Allen.  Allen Township derived its name from the first white man to settle in Hillsdale County, Captain Moses Allen. In 1825, Allen was part of the team conducting the first survey of the Pottawatomie trading trail running between Detroit and Chicago.

 

 

Frederic E. Marshall (1867-1947) was a farmer who began to develop the property around 1920.  His plan was to make the place more inviting to the public and possibly a tourist attraction.  His son, Frederic J. Marshall (1903-1968), a Hillsdale County Sheriff and state representative for eighteen years, continued the work of putting the campground together.

 
The campgrounds has 52 acres.  There is a large spring called the Blue Hole that feeds the four ponds.  There are 16 springs located on the property. 
The Indians and early travelers used the location as a watering spot in their travels along the Sauk Trail.  You can walk around the trails in the campground to view the four ponds.
 
The family added landscaping the surroundings with attractive trees and shrubs.  There are several shelter houses, a swimming pond, and campfire areas. 
Unique to this part of the country is a series of springs producing quantities crystal clear cold water.  Two streams connect the ponds in the campground. 
The family constructed pools and placed rainbow trout in the pools.  Many times you will find families watching the trout jump out of the water.
